CPRE Bedfordshire raises concerns about Sharnbrook development
The CPRE Bedfordshire comments were made via the “Right to Speak” to the Bedford Borough Council Planning Committee Meeting held on Monday 14th October 2024.
The Planning Application under discussion was 22/02193/MOF:
A hybrid planning application for (i) full planning permission for the development of 304 dwellings and all associated infrastructure including roads, utilities, drainage, footpaths, cycleways and landscaping; the construction of a roundabout access on the A6, construction of new vehicular accesses to Mill Road and Templars Way, and the closure of Templars Way junction with the A6, and related offsite highway improvements; construction of a car park to support the Community Hub and school pick-up/drop-off; and (ii) outline permission, with all matters reserved except access, for the development of 196 dwellings, a primary school, a community hub, and the provision of playing pitches and associated changing facility and car parking.
The comments made by a CPRE Bedfordshire spokesperson are available to read in full below. Three areas of concern were raised – the privatisation of open green space and children’s play areas, sewage capacity and pollution of the River Great Ouse, and the absence of affordable homes for social rent in the development.
The CPRE Bedfordshire statement provoked considerable discussion, particularly around the issues of privatisation, sewage and pollution, but the application was agreed. The application is still subject to a number of conditions which have yet to be fully determined and CPRE Bedfordshire will continue to work with local residents to influence the outcome.
