Catching up with the winners of the Bedfordshire Choice Award 2023
We caught up with the winners of the 2023 Bedfordshire Choice Award, the Friends of Windsor Drive Community Open Space, to find out what winning meant to them, and what they’ve been up to since then.

What was it like to win the Bedfordshire Choice Award?
We have always been so very grateful for the opportunity to be part of the great work CPRE Bedfordshire does, and to receive the support we have with our campaign to save Windsor Drive Open Space. So imagine our delight at getting through to the finals of the Bedfordshire Choice Awards and then to win, it was amazing.

What impact did it have?
Being recognised for the work we had done and the things we have achieved, really did give us the confidence to keep on, to push harder, working closer with the community and our local council, Houghton Regis Town Council (HRTC), in order to achieve our aim to keep Windsor Drive Open Space for the community.
We have continued to run events on our green space, such as BioBlitz, litter picks, as well as working with HRTC on establishing a mowing schedule to promote healthier habitats for wildlife and fauna to flourish. We’ve branched out, raising funds to have a defibrillator installed close to the open space, just in case it’s needed, again spurred on by the recognition we received from CPRE Bedfordshire.

What’s next?
We don’t intend to stop there, we have great plans for the future too, including holding fitness sessions on Windsor Drive Open Space, securing funding to offer the sessions free to all in the community, encouraging people to get out and love the countryside we are so lucky to have around us. Foraging events are also on our list, together with planting things to be foraged!
We truly see our relationship with CPRE Bedfordshire as a partnership, working together to find a collective voice when needed, supporting other groups and remembering that together we have a louder voice.
Thank you CPRE Bedfordshire.
