The scandal of land-banking

Thursday, 19 July 2018 12:37

Land-banking - what is it, should you be concerned about it and are Central Bedfordshire Council practicing it on a large scale in Houghton Regis?

Paul Miner, CPRE's Planning Campaign Manager, has written an excellent introduction to the issues surrounding land-banking which you can read here. He describes land-banking, which is the hoarding of land by developers, as "the next big battle in the effort to tackle Britain’s housing crisis and prevent the unnecessary loss of countryside."

CPRE Bedfordshire have written to Cllr James Jamieson, leader of Central Bedfordshire Council, expressing our very serious concerns regarding the decision of Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) to remove Planning application CB/12/03613 Houghton Regis North Site 1 from their Housing Trajectory used to calculate the Council's “5 year Forward Land Supply”.

This site, one of the largest and most important sites for new homes in Central Bedfordshire, was provided with planning permission by CBC on the 2nd June 2014 and so far, more than 4 years later, not a brick has been laid and not one new home built.

The full text of the letter can read by downloading the document at the bottom of the page. You can also read the reply from CBC. The final document for download is a copy of the Houghton Regis North Framework plan from 2012.

You can read more on page 5 of the latest edition of our branch magazine Bedfordshire Matters - it is available to download here and members will have recieved a copy by mail.
